Well, I just happened to wet my pants today when I discovered the wonderful work of a fellow named KOMAT. He's created three patches for Klingon Academy that allow it to run perfectly on modern systems. A new DX wrapper, a resolution enabler, and multicore CPU crash-preventer. I'm about to graduate, and I've not had a crash yet. There are no graphical issues at all, no framerate issues.. it's amazing. It works better now than it ever did for me in the past, and KOMAT has even added 24-bit colours.
Here is his website, with all the fixes. http://jiridvorak.webpark.cz/ka/ Here is KOMAT's thread on KlingonAcademy.com http://klingonacademy.com/showthread.php?t=33224 There is one issue, however. If, like me, you are using a 64x OS, then you'll have trouble running the official 1.02 patch, which is required for KOMAT's fixes to work. However, I was able to get around this by opening the patch self-extractor with WinRAR and just copying the files into the KA main directory.

Thanks for this!
I picked up KA at a fleamarket about 2 years ago and could not even get it to work on the old pentium I keep around so now I can finally experience this game :)

I am not associated in any way with any of the web-sites mentioned in these instructions. I assume no responsibility for issues that may result from following these instructions (though my computers have suffered not harm), nor am I endorsing any illegal activity and am assuming that you are using legally purchased game CDâs to make this procedure work. This solution works for both Star Trek Starfleet Academy (ST SFA) and Star Trek Klingon Academy (ST KA), solving the 'flashing starfield' issue as a result of modern graphics cards and will slow the computer down to make them playable on faster, new computers. These instructions result in both games playing well on my Win7, 32 Bit, Quad-Core, 1GB RAM Radeon Video Card. I realize that these games are the intellectual property of Paramount, Interplay, and Viacom, but the games are at least 18 years old, abandoned by the publishers (in that post-distribution date, no updates were provided.) The games can run on modern computers using the following instructions, thus no re-writing of game code is necessary (though the A.I. of computer controlled ships could be improvedâ¦.they tend to ram you, and fail to âbreak contactâ even when their shields are above 90 percent,â¦.it seems this would be a technique when shields are low and âtaking the opponent out with youâ is the last strategyâ¦but I digress), the only issue to be solved for distribution would be: packaging for easy installation, solving the âflashing starfield issueâ, and slowing the game or computer down (all of which are solved with these instructions). The publisher could make a bit of money for minimal work by making these games available on STEAM or GOOD OLD GAMES dot COM for say $10.00 per copyâ¦.I suspect they both would sell well, considering the number of web-sites that have people asking how to make these games playable. Following the steps below will make both games entirely playable from the hard drive with no discs in the CD tray. You must have the original game CD's or download ISO images and burn them to CD from: old-games dot com. They have reasonable prices for one day and 30 day access. 1. Install either game from DISC 1 to the hard drive, allowing them to install to their default selected location (you will need all the game discs to continue). Each game will take up about 3.10 GB of space. After following all the remaining steps, you can burn the installed gameâs sub-directory to DVD for easy installation should your hard drive fail, or if you want to copy the entire game to another computer. 2. Copy each of the remaining discs MOVIE files (ST SFA discs 2-5 1996-97 AND Checkov's Lost Mission Disc 1998 (Install Checkovâs disc, then copy the discs MOVIE sub-directories into the hard driveâs game MOVIE sub-directoryâ¦this also updates the game to v1.20 solving the Joystick issue) or (ST KA discs 2-6 2000, search the internet and install the v1.02 patch), to the respective gameâs hard drive MOVIES sub-directory. *having followed Step 1, the MOVIES sub-directory on the hard drive should be in: ST SFA: C:Program FilesInterplayStarfleet AcademyMovies ST KA: C:Program Files14 Degrees EastKlingon AcademyMovies **recommend searching the internet and installing game patch to v1.02 **As a bonus, the ST SFA game includes a DEMO MOVIE of SECRET OF VULCAN FURY, a game which was never published, though it looked interesting. 3. IMPORTANT FOR BOTH ST SFA AND ST KA: Download and place the 'jiri-dvorak' RENDERING FIX (file named 'DDRAW.DLL') that fixes the 'flashing starfield' issue on modern PC's, from the website jiri-dvorak dot cz/ka/ into the game's main sub-directory on the hard dive: ST SFA: C:Program FilesInterplayStarfleet Academy ST KA: C:Program Files14 Degrees EastKlingon Academy On the web-site are additional files for ST KA, a Resolution Fix which allows the user to select higher resolutions when the gameâs launcher window appears (SETUP in the lower left of the window), but I find that the original setting of 640x480 looks best, AND a HEAP file which is supposed to force the game to play using only one core of multi-core CPUâs (supposedly the user is to install it if the game dumps out to Windows during game play, however, I have not experienced this issue). 4. You must edit each gameâs CONFIG file, telling the game where to find the MOVIES needed during gameplay. Since we have copied all the movies from all the discs in the steps above to the hard drive, we will be telling the CONFIG files that the movies are on the C: hard drive. Edit the following files as specified: ST SFAâs âSFA.CFGâ file: moviePath=C:Program FilesInterplayStarfleet Academy voicePath=C:Program FilesInterplayStarfleet Academy ST KAâs âOPTIONS.CFGâ file Movie Path Line to read as: Moviepath=C:Program Files14 Degrees EastKlingon AcademyMovies 5. For ST SFA in particular, download and install 'CPU KILLER (from cpukiller dot com) which slows down modern computers to make the Space Battles more 'Capital Ship Speed' vs. 'Star Wars Ludicrous Speed'. Before launching ST SFA, launch CPU KILLER and try setting it to 10 percent or 20 percent. Generally, ST KA can be slowed down from in-game OPTIONS, however, CPU Killer can be used for ST KA if necessary. *CPU Killer helps solve the âfast computerâ issue for other games like STAR TREK 25TH ANNIVERSARY GAME if you are not using the DOSBOX solution. *CPU Killer is free, but only runs 20 minutes at a time when launced. To run it longer per instance launched, you must purchase the full version for $29.00 U.S. I am not associated with the company. 6. For both ST SFA and ST KA the Introduction Movies will play when the games are launched, however, the in-game option to view the Introduction Movies will not work because the game is looking for them on the CD and we have changed the MOVIE path. In order to Browse the each gameâs MOVIES sub-directory and watch the MOVIES âoutsideâ the game, using Windows Media Player or your favorite media player, you must âregisterâ the MOVIE FILES Extension (*.MVE) by Registering the gameâs MOVIE *.MVE) files to be âassociatedâ, recognized (thus playable), by your Operating System and media player of your choice, independent or outside the game. The Introduction MOVIES are generally found in the first Sub-Directory of the gameâs MOVIES sub-directory. Download the GAP.EXE program (Game Audio Player) from: fileplanet dot com/164521/160000/fileinfo/Game-Audio-Player to a sub-directory you create, I recommend making a sub-directory in each gameâs sub-directory structure named âGAP MVE PLAYERâ. Unzip the program. Create a file named REGISTER.BAT in the GAP sub-directory, enter this into it: regsvr32 GMFCore.ax Save the file then run the REGISTER.BAT file you just created. Now, when you double-left click a *.MVE (MOVIE) file, you should be prompted to select a program (like Windows Media Player) to play the MOVIEâ¦you may have to run the REGISTER.BAT file again after re-booting the computer. 7. Once you have played each game once, verified your joystick settings, mapped your keyboard custom controls to your liking, and are satisfied with the game you can burn the gameâs entire sub-directory to a DVD to make subsequent installation easy should your hard drive fail, or you just want to install the game to a different computer. Merely copy the files from the disc to a new hard drive taking care to end up with the structure prescribed here, ending up with: ST SFA: C:Program FilesInterplayStarfleet Academy ST KA: C:Program Files14 Degrees EastKlingon Academy Enjoy!! Curios Captain..it questions the existence of a place to comment, yet comments anyhow.
It's life Jim but not as we know it, not as we know it. I agree that ST KA is better than ST SFA, but have you seen anywhere else, such a concise set of instructions to get both games to work on modern computers and graphics cards AND slow the computer down for more enjoyable space battles (especially on ST SFA)? I doubt it, again you are welcome.
